  • Leasehold Forestry Bridging Project

This site is the photo gallery of the bridging phase of the Leasehold Forestry Bridging Project. The project is being implemented by the Society for Partners in Development (SPD) a national development NGO based in Kathmandu, Nepal in partnership with the governments Department of Forests and financed out of special grant funds made available by the International Fund for Agricultural Development -IFAD.

For more information about this project please visit http://www.spd.org.np/ongoing.htm and for furhter information about SPD please visit www.spd.org.np

The Leasehold Forestry Project is a project to protect the environment and reduce poverty through natural resources management as an entry point for interevention.

There are two major differences between the leasehold forestry and community forestry though both the programs use the community development approach. The striking difference is that leasehold forestry is targetted at rehabilitating leased blocks of degraded where as community forestry deals with existing forests. While community forestry is a preventative approach leasehold forestry aims at reversing environmental degradation and therefore could be said to be a curative approach to environmental protection.

The second important difference that separates the two is that the leasehold forestry is meant for and exclusively targets the poorest of the poor where as community forestry benefits everyone and in the process the poor is always excluded or overwhelmingly overshadowed by elite groups.

SPD's major role in this project is to strengthen the capacity building and gender mainstreaming aspect of the projects activities to lead the proejct towards sustainable development.

This site is meant to be a photographic journey into the projects activitis. Comments, suggestions and enquiries for further information are welcome.
